University of Zambia School of Medicine

The University of Zambia School of Medicine is Zambia's first Medical School. It is situated  at the University Teaching Hospital (UTH) and The Ridgeway Campus on Nationalist Road within the greater City of Lusaka.

Its scope of academic instructional delivery has increased over the years to include not only the MB ChB Program, but also Pharmacy, Nursing Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, Physiotherapy, Environmental Health and Public Health.

The School of Medicine was established as an independent School of the University of Zambia in 1970. Pre-clinical teaching in Bachelor of science (Human Biology) and Clinical teaching in Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, however, had started earlier in 1968. The first output of graduates with full medical qualifications was in 1973. Since then, the School has presented over 1200 medical doctors for the award of its joint degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

As a working unit of the University and of the Ministry of Health, tasks of the school of Medicine are three fold:
Teaching/training in Health Sciences, health care provision (service) and research (knowledge generation). These tasks are now being successfully met by staff of the University Medical school and the UTH in collaboration.
