Health Professions Education

Health Professions Education Training Programmes

The Department of Medical Education Development offers a Health Professions Education (HPE) multifaceted programme based around the five main roles that a health professions educator has to fulfil. The HPE programme has four exit points for participants/students:

 

  • MedScholars Certificate: This is aimed at providing basic educational skills to the lecturers of the School of Medicine and affiliate colleges. It is a capacity building initiative and participants are awarded an attendance certificate. Participants have to attend all the course work/workshops of the four basic HPE modules but are not required to take assessments or submit assignments.
  • Postgraduate Diploma in Education for Health Professionals (PGDEHP): This is aimed at providing middle-level educational skills to the lecturers of the School of Medicine and affiliate colleges Participants attend all the coursework/workshops of the four basic HPE modules AND are required to take assessments and/or submit assignments. Additionally, participants must complete Project 1 (Planning, organising and conducting an educational event) and Project 2 (Write a portfolio of reflective documentation of educational activities pertaining to each module and field placements).
  • Master of Science in Health Professions Education (MSc HPE): This is aimed at providing advanced educational skills to the lecturers of the School of Medicine and affiliate colleges. Participants attend all the coursework/workshops of the four basic HPE modules, an additional educational research module AND are required to take assessments and/or submit assignments. Additionally, participants must complete Project 1 (Planning, organising and conducting an educational event) and Project 2 (Write a portfolio of reflective documentation of educational activities pertaining to each module and field placements). All MSc HPE students must develop a research proposal, conduct the research and write a master’s degree thesis.
  • Doctor of Philosophy in Health Professions Education (PhD in HPE): At entry participants must already possess a master’s degree in a health related profession. They are also required to complete successfully all the five modules done at MSc HPE level before developing a research proposal, conducting the research, and writing a PhD research dissertation. The educational research must be original and substantial for the award of the University of Zambia doctorate.
